The Sur Translation Support Programme for Argentine Literary Works (Sur Programme) was established by Argentina’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 2009 in order to promote the dissemination of Argentine literature, thoughts and values around the world.
It consists of the award of subsidies for the translation of works authored by Argentine citizens and written in Spanish into any other language.
To date, 1,652 subsidies have been granted in 51 countries, for translation of more than 480 Argentine-authored literary works into 50 languages.
The subsidies are granted to foreign publishers against their commitment to publish the translated work before November 30 of the year following the award of the subsidy.
The subsidy application submission period runs from February 15 to September 30 of each year.
The Argentine publishers, the authors of the works or the agents that hold the copyright may act on behalf of the foreign publishers, but the subsidy is always paid to the latter.
The works must have been written in Spanish by Argentine authors and must have been previously published.
They can be fiction or non-fiction, and of any literary genre (novel, short story, poetry, theater, children's and youth literature, etc.).
Receiving the Sur Programme subsidy is incompatible with receiving another type of State-granted subsidy for the same work in Argentina.
The amount of the subsidy may not exceed U$3,200 per work.
The subsidy application must be made by submitting a form, accompanied by other documentation.
