November 2025 | Presentation on Malvinas Islands at Thammasat University

On November 21, the Head of the Economic Section of the Embassy, Juan Pablo Volken, gave a virtual presentation to students and professors from different majors of Thammasat University, entitled "The Question of the Malvinas Islands: 60 Years of UNGA Resolution 2065 (XX)," organized in collaboration with the Hispanic and Latin American Studies Department, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University.

Malvinas Islands are an integral part of the Argentine territory that has been illegally occupied by the United Kingdom since 3 January 1833, when British forces invaded and forcefully seized the islands, after expelling the Argentine authorities and residents.

United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2065 (XX), adopted on 16 December 1965, stated that Malvinas Islands are subject to a “colonial situation” and that a sovereignty dispute exists between Argentina and the United Kingdom over this territory.

This Resolution, whose content has been repeated in numerous subsequent Resolutions from 1965 to the present, also called on Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations to resolve the dispute, a call that the UK —unlike Argentina— has ignored.

During the presentation, aspects related to the origin of the dispute (the British invasion) were discussed, as well as Argentina's legal and historical titles, and the treatment of the "Malvinas Question" at the UN and other international organizations.

We thank Thammasat University for the opportunity to elaborate on this subject, which is of utmost importance for the Argentine foreign policy and is deeply ingrained in the Argentine society.
